Anyone played one of those big bodies Mexican bass acoustic guitars?

Question:

Has anyone ever played one of those Mexican big bodied bass guitar often played in a mariachi bands?    Are they fretless?   How do they sound compared to an acoustic bass guitar?   What are they called?   And where would I get one?   Do I ask too many questions? I’m thinking of something a little more portable then my stand up Kay bass. RJS

Galvan Music in Corpus Christi has a used one (Still in nice condition) for $750. I didn’t even notice if it had frets or not. It’s way to big for me. Almost bigger than me. I was trying to check out the Sexto. Rolland

Look for "Guitarron" on the net and you’ll get the info your looking for. Most have frets, some don’t (usually older ones). Hope this helps some, Geezer

Response:

>Has anyone ever played one of those Mexican big bodied bass guitar often >played in a mariachi bands?

        Yes. >Are they fretless?

Mine and the ethnic ones are. >How do they sound >compared to an acoustic bass guitar?

        Superior. >What are they called?

Guitarron. > And where would I get one?

Mexico, where I got mine.  Check the net. >Do I ask too many questions?

No. >I’m thinking of something a little more portable then my stand up Kay bass.

I would suggest a bass guitar rather than a Guitarron.         Ken

Response:

Isn’t the tuning different with a guitarron.  I have never tried one but I’m thinking it typically is not EADG.

If you’re looking for something to replace your upright a guitarron is not what you’re looking for; the sound just ain’t there. Here’s what I replaced the upright with: http://www.azola.com/sys-tmpl/decobass/ jb
