Samick Bass amp cuts out

Possibly? Though adjusting the volume pot does not cause any cutting out – the cutting out just happens when playing at a set volume (though it seemed to happen more often at a higher volume). But can sometimes a bad pot that needs cleaning cut in and out at a set volume rather than only showing problems (such as crackling) when being adjusted?

I had a similar problem with a Hartke amp.  What I discovered was that it was simply getting to hot.  Our practice area was reaching near 90 degrees and the amp was crammed into a 4 space rack.  It would crap out while playing for about a minute, then just start working again.  I took the head out of the rack, put a fan behind it and it worked without problem. The louder and longer you play the more heat you will generate – although it’s hard to imagine a 25w amp getting that hot.  There may be some other issues compounding the matter such as loose or corroded connections, possibly a cracked solder joint or circuit board. From your discription it does not sound like a case of a dirty pot – you would have the crackling sound when adjusting it. Middle C

It doesn’t matter what’s plugged into it, as long as it’s outputting more than it’s designed to. It’s probably getting to hot, or just shutting off before it damages itself.

A friend of mine has a Samick Bass guitar and Samick BA-25 Bass amp. He got it second hand and has had it about a week. Has noticed no problems playing it at home but when we were all jamming today it kept cutting out. Tried a different lead and different amp and that eliminated the guitar and lead as being the problem. Anyone had experience with this kind of amp? (Also branded as the "AB-25") (near the bottom on this page: http://samickguitar.com/amp/) Any ideas of what the problem could be? He tried both the high and low gain inputs. The problem seemed to occur less if the volume was turned down.

Can a bass amp be over-driven by a bass guitar though? Not likely. It could be if the room had some strange resonances at very specific frequency. You woul hear it ad your speaker would have been distroyed. It is juz theoretic speculation. Check my previous message about thermal shutdown of the Power Amp Integrated circuit. Greg

I’m the person whose amp we’re talking about here, so I thought I’d add a few things. When I’m playing alone in my room, then it’s fine – I can crank the volume all the way up and play at length with no problems at all.  It only started cutting out when I was jamming with RK & others (my bass, 2 guitars and drums in a smallish auditorium), and now it’s fine once again back at home. So what I’m wondering is whether it could have been the acoustics of the room (causing echoes/reverbs) or the proximity of two other (low watt) amps (possibly causing interference) that was causing the amp to behave so erratically?

Response:

is he trying to drive an external speaker cabinet with a lower impedance than the amp can handle?

Open your amp and look inside. It very likely has integrated power amp. The chip has thermal shutdown to protect against chip failure and when you overheat it it shuts down output power to 0. It may be something other but effect you described strongly suggest it is exactly this kind of problem problem. There is possible remedy. You could add some kind of heatsink to the area of the case where the Power Amp IC is attached. Check add thermal paste between heatsink and case. Insure that PA chip has no elecrical connectin to amp metal chassis. Otherwise I would suggest something more powerfull. This amp is really just for home (solo) practice and playing bass with acoustic instruments only. Greg
