Buy both…Then there’s no problem. I’d seriously "play" an AC30 before buying one. And I mean play. You may not ever find a tonal nirvana with that amp. From what I’ve heard…and seen…they become something of an obsession. good luck

The problem with buying an amp like so and so has, in order to get their sound, is that you don’t have any idea of what so and so had to go through in order to make the amp sound like that in the first place. And then there is the matter of the guitar and its mods, the style of playing the guitar player uses, etc. Discouraging, isn’t it? <G> Get out there and play as many combinations as you can. Find "your" sound. Ed Cregger

The thing about AC 30s is they really don’t sound great until you crank them – there is no Master Volume. How loud you gonna play? I mean they sound wonderfuk after that though, if that’s the tone you’re going for. >Buy both…Then there’s no problem. I’d seriously "play" an AC30 before >buying one. And I mean play. I have both. A real non-reissue 1965 Fender DeLuxe Reverb and 2 Vox AC30’s. The Deluxe is a totally different vibe. Wonderful tone, rich harmonics, nice drippy reverb. Not very loud. All tone. Not loud enough to gig with, without serious PA and monitors. An acoustic drumset will drown you out, or make you push the amp beyond the envelope. One of the best recording amps ever. The AC 30’s have a complex harmonic structure and a chime-like ringing quality. A warm "British" saturation where for lack of better description the high-end will distort and compress while the mid’s stay fairly clean. They have great low-end (bass guitar even sounds good at low to medium volume). The AC 30 is the king of amps as far as I’m concerned. No one amp can do it all, but the AC 30 comes real close. The sound great wide open too! I have used a 2-AC-30 setup for over 20 years and never been wanting for more amplification. I also use a Fender tube reverb unit in front of them and get the best of both worlds. I love my Deluxe at home and in the studio. I love my Voxes at home, in the studio, and live. Just my opinion, Tom RUtledge

The speakers contribute a lot. I put a new Blue Celestion in my ‘65 BFDR and it definately shifts the vibe towards Voxland. I like the way it adds a touch of upper-mid chime. I tried the original Oxford, a couple of different Jensens, a Weber ( forget which one ) and a D120 before I settled on the Blue. Had to hack-butcher the cabinet by removing 4 mounting studs to install it, didn’t want to drill the speaker. Don’t care, really. I’m probably gonna leave that speaker in there. Claude

Ain’t that an understatement. I am all but ready to give up the search….. and revert to a Trademark 60 and be done with it. Too many variables.

Exactly. I like biting into the shiny red skin of a Deluxe Reverb and the fact that the seeds are all at the core, so I don’t have to deal with them. The Vox is often sweeter and usually juicier, but peeling it is a pain, as is spitting out the seeds. Of course you can go with the later Thomas Organ "Naval" AC-30, which doesn’t have the seeds, but most people consider them sonically inferior.
