Just bought a cheap bass

I can do setups with no problems. My cause for concern was if the truss rod could handle the extra tension. Thanks. Pt

Saw one of these in person today at GC, very nice looking. I think this is the first OLP bass I have seen with a rosewood fongerboad. They did not have one of the natural finish ones in stock.

OK – Somebody please set me straight on this.  What is an OLP?  I gather by the context used that it refers to one of the many imported guitar brands. Or maybe I’m wrong….

Changing to a lighter or heavier gauge string can affect your action and intonation, you might have to do a setup. Check out this site for a decent how-to www.altguitarbass.com/faq.asp Strings are a personal preference kind of thing, but I can tell you that I dig GHS Boomers or RotoSound nickel wounds because they are inexpensive, bright and easy on frets, hope this helps.

If you look at it as just another bass guitar, but one that is unbelievably inexpensive, yet has a sound, fit and finish of basses costing three to four times as much, you will be pleased. To an old Fender addict, such as myself, I really like my OLP instruments. I like them for what they are, not for  what they resemble. I would never buy a real Music Man guitar/bass guitar. If I were going to spend that much money, Music Man would be way down there on the list of possible choices. They just are not my style. My OLP basses came with round wound "Slinky" strings. Too light for me, but I am trying to get used to them. Ed Cregger

I just want to say that you guys are a VERY bad influence on a recovering GASaholic! I’ve been reading all the OLP talk here and (wash my mouth out with soap) have been seriously considering a cheap 4 string for slapping purposes to go with my herd of "real" basses. The OLP sounded really interesting so I started nosing around. But there seemed to be none available around my parts until I came upon one over at Guitar Center. Gave it a REAL close look, but didn’t buy. I thought the price (though low) wasn’t quite low enough yet. Would LOVE to find a used one.  The bad news is that I KNOW I’m going to be putting fingerprints all over that thing every time I go to GC now until I own one. You guys are a bad influence. :( Benj — Due to SPAM innundation above address is turned off!

The same seller has a black OLP for sale too – very black! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2575961527 I’m familiar with OLP (a friend of mine has a kid who bought one to start out on bass), but the strings it came with were overheavy…it would suit a set of 40’s much better.  The black one looks very saucy indeed and for less than 150GBP it makes me wish I was in the US right now! Same old question here…how much different do they sound from the original? If  a lot, I guess that you can always throw some money at changing the pickup. P

Wow, thats really nice looking. As for strings, I got my OLP used so I don’t know what kind of strings are on it. If the are the EBSlinkys, though, I like them. They sound good and have held up well.

So after reading Harmony Central Reviews and reviews from AGB I decided to get an OLP. I always liked Music Man basses and this one at looks good. For those who are familiar with OLP’s I have a couple questions. This comes with Ernie Ball Slinky’s strings which I am sure I will want to replace. What strings would you suggest (round wound or ground wound)? And would it be safe to put medium gauge strings on it without damaging the neck?
