New crazy idea for a nicely portable cab
Question:
So hi everyone, I’m feeling a bit better an came up with some crazy new idea (after i decided that, as a bassist, i needed a subwoofer in my car so that i can hear the nicest instrument on da planet). The car subwoofer is ordered, i’ll just have to get it and get it connected. So then, this idea came up… How would a cab soud, wich is composed of one of these. http://www.syrincs.de/new/index.htm?http://www.syrincs.de/new/bp10.htm For a bit of midrange, i’d take about 4 of these in a nice cab… http://www.eminence.com/eminence/pages/products02/la/la6mr.htm And finally, ad elegantly a good quality HF horn to it… Estimated size: 45×45x30 cm^3, weight… about 25kg Any thoughts? Philippe

You’d need about 16 subs to produce the same noise levels as the eminence speakers. 101dB efficiency V 93dB isn’t a good match… and the meat of your signal is below 270Hz No Philippe, if you want light, brutal and loud, try one of these: http://www.tech-soundsystems.com/eng/images/10er/popup_410.jpg I did and I like it… Pity it’s expensive cb

I don’t like the sound of Subs in a car (crossed over nicely) for listening to bass guitar. For keyboard/electronica bass, it rocks, but not bass guitar. I hear the notes better and clearer on standard stock coax speakers. — O< "Hey, who’s da’ U-boat Captain?" /() ^^ Slidell, LA

Okay, there is yet another reason.. i always wanted to be cool, and dirve my car on a sunny afternoon along a footwalk while pushing something like "Highway to hell" until going nuts… This might not be cool at all, or comprehensable, it’s a rather emotional thing… Philippe – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> So hi everyone, > I’m feeling a bit better an came up with some crazy new idea (after i > decided that, as a bassist, i needed a subwoofer in my car so that i can > hear the nicest instrument on da planet). Hi Chris, Please forgive me what i’m going to tell you, but i can’t keep off of mentioning it… I really like you posts, especially as they’ve got a little "homo technicus" point of view… BUT Have you ever heard about "Homo Faber", a book written by the swiss author Max Frisch? It’s one of the best books i’ve ever read, and BTW i could even identiy with homo faber in some way… Thank you very much for the strings BTW, i’ll try to pick them up shortly. Philippe

I understand completely. I used to install car stereos professionally, and yes… I had a good system that I enjoyed OFTEN. Loved cranking The Smiths or Count Basie through it
Dwight Yokam… you name it. For what it’s worth… AC/DC is exactly the kind of old school music that sounds better through simpler systems though. Look for Peter Gabriel, Extreme, Korn, Thomas Dolby to sound better through separates. — O< "Hey, who’s da’ U-boat Captain?" /() ^^ Slidell, LA

Forgiven… I’ve no idea what the books are about though! > Thank you very much for the strings BTW, i’ll try to pick them up shortly.

In general – wattage of car speakers are "overrated" as the specified SPL and peak effect are measured for a very short time period. Then again – they might work wery well in a small room (you car). If you don’t move around a lot on stage, you should try combining a small combo with the Eminence Buttkicker http://www.eminence.com/eminence/pages/products02/buttkicker/buttkick… mounted on a plywood plate – it really makes you feel the sub but it doesn’t interfer and cause phase problems with the PA sound.

Been lurking in rec.audio.pro and reading shitloads off the net on micing, recording, mixing, etc. and what you are saying makes sense: Most "good" albums are mixed to sound good on what the majority will be listening to them on: factory stereo systems, and low-to-moderate level consumer home electronics. Of course, there is a compromise to make it sound decent on different playback options.

There are two major problems with automotive components in a normal room environment. One is called "cabin gain" and it is essentially a 12dB/octave BOOST that you get FREE just by being in an enclosed vehicle with the subwoofers. In a room or club – no cabin gain – you’ll hear 12dB/octave LESS bass than you would in the vehicle. environment (2pi). Played away from a corner or wall, that’s another -3dB lost. I think the performance isn’t going to be that great. HOWEVER, there are some things that can be applied to a woofer system for bass – specifically the design of the cabinet. That looks like what they call a 4th order Bandpass design. That design and the similar (but double ended) 6th order Bandpass design could make a nice subwoofer system for live bass guitar.

Philippe, This idea comes up every now and then. Here’s my suggestion — if you’ve the cash just burning a hole in your pocket, then buy the set-up you’re proposing and actually give it a try. Report here after you do.

And have a fire extinguisher ready! – as already suggested car speakers are massively over rated (as are car amplifiers). I would suggest de-rating them by a factor of ten!. — Nigel Goodwin C.Farmer Ltd. Matlock
