01101001 Larry- Very cool. I wish I still had the picture of my 7mo old son standing on the back of my Fender Villager with a seraphic expression on his face. Before folks start talking about guitar abuse – that think was built like a tank and never even knew anything was on it’s back.

Being without external music (even instruments) for some time can be pretty inspiring. Should try actually _doing_ that some time. Like just waiting until I really _have_ something going inside my head and actually _writing_ it down (or recording it, or something). Or just getting inspired from it. I probably have such insane dreams because I never really watch movies…

I bet. Most songs I try to work out, I get sick of before they are even near finished. Meh. Only see this once btw. Cheers! — O< "Hey… pull my flipper!" /() ^^ Slidell, LA

My 16 month old twin boys go absolutely raving berserk when I bring out my 4-string and set it on the ground for them. They love to strum the strings and eat the knobs. I do say "don’t eat it" quite a bit. I don’t recall any famous bass players who played with their teeth. Seems like a recipe for that hockey player look. Below find a link to photo of my son Martin, who not only likes to play in D minor, "the saddest of all keys", he was wailing Van Halen style even before he learned to walk! http://www.geocities.com/faultline1989/Martin-jams.jpg OK OK it’s not bass tapping give him a break he was only 7 months old. It can get REAL wanky at times, but I’ve been jealous of real piano players for a long time now – left hand/right hand coordination, the ability to accompany yourself etc. So, I’ve been picking out cover tunes to try 2-handed tapping on for awhile, and trying to learn to split my thinking between right/left. Here’s some that I’ve tried so far: Overjoyed – Stevie Wonder (Vic Wooten does a great version of this) Mrs. Robinson – Simon and Garfunkle Your Song – Elton John Yesterday – The Beatles You’re So Vain – Carly Simon Aja – Steely Dan I recorded this for the hell of it about 5 years ago – it ended up being 1 main bass part and then I went and overdubbed solos and stuff. At the very least, I had a fun time doing it, but as a serious recording for me? Nah. It can be too wanky and too clanky, plus I need a full band to Here’s a link to the tune – give any comments! http://www.mikehandler.com/Aural/-soundclips-/-misc-/Aja.m3u Mike – NJ www.mikehandler.com

You’re So Vain is one I tried a while back. Apt title for self indulgent bass work too

One of my Gospel students brought me this awesome Gospel bass tune yesterday. It had a cool tapping intro in an island/funk feel. He just wanted the chord progression for Sunday, so I didn’t get a chance to bust the solo. Wish I could remember the name of the artist. He brought his 3 year old kid into the lesson with him, so I was a little distracted (God, I hate kids…). — Learning funk bass? visit www.js3jazz.com/store.htm "Speaking the Truth in times of Universal deceit is a revolutionary act." — George Orwell
