Your daughter is a first-call session player! Glad that the time off from studies won’t be detrimental to her overall all academics.

Response:

Nigel Glad to see it’s VERY changed days from when I was at ‘Comp.’ school, and electric guitars and basses weren’t even considered to be ‘proper’ instruments. Congrats to your daughter for being so in demand as a bassist so early in her career…lol…. and LONG may it continue for her [only, with going rate for the job in future ;-) )))) ] Regards to you both Fretbuzz

Funny how things change isn’t it?. The new music teacher at her school is setting up a couple of bands, first a rock band – where she plays bass, so far they have practised ‘Rocking All Over The World – Status Quo’ and ‘I Love To Boogie – TRex’, neither of which she finds very challenging (to say the least!) – presumably that’s why the teacher has chosen them?. He’s also wanting to start a jazz band, where he’s asked her to play piano, but that’s not started yet – but she’s bought a Jazz piano book and started practising – occasionally!. She’s also forming a band with a couple of girls she knows, but this time as the drummer! – their first plan is to cover ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love – The Darkness’. Sarah, the guitarist, already knows it, Melissa is going to learn the bass part and teach it to Alex, the bass player. Melissa’s drum instructor is going to learn the drum part and teach it to Melissa. Singing is still under discussion, Melissa’s happy to sing but isn’t sure about drumming at the same time. Ever noticed that teenagers don’t do anything simple?. Oh, she also plays flute as well! >Congrats to your daughter for being so in demand as a bassist so early in >her career…lol…. and LONG may it continue for her [only, with going rate >for the job in future ;-) )))) ]

Pity it doesn’t pay anything :-) Apart from missing lessons of course!. — Nigel Goodwin C.Farmer Ltd. Matlock

My daughters found a really good reason for learning bass!. She’s 13 years old (year 8) and during the last week managed to miss an entire days worth of normal lessons (including Maths, DT, Spanish and English). Apparently the year 11 kids doing music GCSE have to write and perform an original composition, which is recorded and sent off for marking. You’re not expected to play all the instruments yourself, so my daughter has been taken out of lessons to play bass for all the GCSE students as she’s the only bass player in the school. They tried some of the year 11 guitarists on bass, but the teacher said they were crap and sent for Melissa instead :-) She also been drafted in to play bass for year 9 students as well, presumably they have to produce something to show they are capable of carrying on with studying music?. She’s got some more year 11’s to do after Easter as well, so no doubt will be missing some more lessons because of it. Luckily she’s either top, or very near the top, in most subjects – so missing a few lessons to play bass isn’t a problem. — Nigel Goodwin C.Farmer Ltd. Matlock
