It’s for when you can’t read music, so keyboards and horns are out, can’t make a regular guitar sound like your favorite guitarist, and don’t have the coordination and stamina to play drums. It’ll get you in a band, and all you have to do is pluck an string here and there to make a deep sound, the deeper the better, while moving your fongers over the neck to mimic the guitarist. JMH

I happen to have a used 4 string bass and amp that may fit the bill. The following is what I’ve posted last week: For Sale: Fernandes LEB-P4 4 string P-Bass Park GB 25-12 25 watt RMS practice amp Both the bass and the amp are in excellent condition and would be perfect for any beginners, especially for Christmas. The bass is very well made and plays quite well. I’ve also got some extra stuff for beginners. BTW, I’ve heard that Fernandes also makes the Japanese P-Bass Fenders. Go to my webpage for more details and photographs of the equipment. http://ipass.net/~freebase/bass/bass.html The asking prices are negotiable. If you are just getting started and need something for garage or basement playing, 150 watts should be fine for now (especially if you’re on a budget) I still use mine quite often and I even use it for smaller clubs. If you can afford it, go for 400 watts and you should be fine in just about any situation. Anything bigger is for hot-heads who like to drive around on a lawn mower with a 455 V-8… -J.C.

if your just starting you only need a practice amp with rated 15 or above

Looking for something else I found a photo of McCartney, circa Rubber Soul with a capo on his bass ! This is a most uncommon practise. Somebody know more about it ? In the picture the bass is obscured, but I’d guess it’s the Hohner violin bass ; and it looks to be capo’d at the 5th. Assuming that the picture is correctly captioned, I ran through Rubber Soul looking for odd keys but nothing fit. Anyway, capo’ing at the 5th doesn’t really help with the outer keys in the way that 2nd 3rd or 4th pos. does. Anyone up on this stuff ? Know which song(s) were done this way ? — J o h n

Just a guess, but I’d say Paul might have done this to achieve the high register bass notes in "Michelle".

Paul was ask about this in a recent interview. He basically stated that he did’nt remember ever using a capo on the bass but that he would often experiment and that he was doing so at the time. Dan

There is a widely used photo from the Sgt. Pepper sessions that shows Pauls Rickenbacker bass with a Capo at the 5th fret. It is likely that this was done for one of the vari-speed tracks (such as Lucy…). Sadly, Paul doesn’t remember why he did this… – Sj — Route 66 Guitars * 21 North Altadena Drive, Pasadena, CA 91107 tel: (213) GUI TARS (484 8277) * fax: (818) 683 8693 Used & Vintage Right & Left Handed Stringed Instruments Email & fax stocklists available… http://www.earthlink.net/~route66/

i suspect paul used the capo for tonality reasons rather than to facilitate playing in a particular key. by using the capo, his hollow body bass would produce a slightly more biting tone than normal, which complemented his quest at that time to put the bass in a more prominent postion in the mixes. by the time they began sgt pepper, paul was using a rickenbacker and recording on a separate track, quite a luxury for him considering the amount of tracks available (but then, it was always Paul Paul Paul, wasn’t it?). ian macdonald comments on this in Revolution In The Head, definitely one of the best beatle-books ever.
