But I’ve heard that the low end Yamahas are a bit on the noisy side.  I could use something in this price range (under $400) that is whisper quiet for use in the studio.  Any comments?

Something USED. Look at anything and everything in your price range and try them.  Some great ones are the Hohner Steinbergeres. Prices seem to be steadily rising on those as people discover them.   ;-(            don – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I am looking for a good 4 string bass guitar (under $400) >In your opinion what would be my best choice, and why?

I AGREE! I always comb through the used "stuff"! let some other bloke pay retail. check out the stores, play and test. if you find any thing you are intrested in, but needs a set up, most reputable stores will set up the bass with no extra charge, or maybe a small bench fee. Here’s and example fo some of the deals I’ve made. I went into my local string shop, and found a traded in oriental p-bass copy, the neck was good and i was amazed at the killer tone.. I thought it played and felt dang near like my "73 precision" only a little lighter. I thought, this would be good for my nephew… so I laid down my $85.00 (plus tx) and walked out the door with it… a couple weeks later I was back in the store, and found an early 80’s Fender Side-Kick amp (100w head and a 1×15 cab) in good condition, I wrote out a check for $150.00 and loaded the stuff in the trunk of the car… My nephew’s birthday rolled around and BANG! I’m an instant hero..Bargians can be had. Tim Schnautz

Well, for $400, your choices are going to be fairly limited, but there are still some decent options out there..but what type of music are you going to be playing? Metal, 50’s rock, techno, motown, jazz? you might want to check around for a mexi fender, jazz or precesion. A good rule of thumb is, precesion-think motown, old R&B, and blues. Jazz- more modern, cutting sound. For around $400 though, I really like the Danelectro Longhorn. Real warm, fat tone. But go out to the shops in your area, and try out everything, be weary (but open-minded) of salesmen’s suggestions, and go to Matt Schmills (sp?) review page. I forget the URL, and i dont have it anywhere on my computer, but do a search for it, or wait until the next poster gives it to you ;-}. ryan

Yamaha BBN4 It’s a very nice bass, and you’re paying for the guitar, not the name on the headstock. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I am looking for a good 4 string bass guitar (under $400) >In your opinion what would be my best choice, and why?
