"Stain' Alive" THAT sound?
Question:
Hi, I know nothing about bass guitar, I am thinking of getting one to try and learn. However, I am wondering, the bass guitar sound in "Stayin’ Alive" is that the classic Precision Bass sound that everyone talks about? Or could someone give me an example of a song that has the "normal" Fender P Bass sound? Take care, Simon Howson
Response:
Yep, that’s about it. Or check out any early motown recordings with James Jamerson as bass player. Highly recommended Fender P sound movie and book "Standing in the shadows of Motown". Most of the bass playing there done by Bob Babbit, all on Fender P. Danko

Thanks for your advice, much appreciated. I have been listening to a lot of Miles Davis jazz/fusion recently, and a lot of the credits are for Michael Henderson, some of the photos show him using a Fender Jazz, and a very old looking Precision (with metal covers over the pick ups). It seems Fender basses were very around the late 60’s early 70’s. One track I really like is IFE, from the album BIG FUN, the different sounds on that one track alone are amazing. Simon Howson
