No hack job neccesary if you want one of your own. http://www.warmoth.com/Bass/bodies/images/TBirdBassRr.jpg Just bolt on a P-neck and wire up the pickups of your choice. — Oc () ) //^^ // / Bud LeCompte http://budlecompte.com

I’d have to go to Holland to find them. Wooden shoes arn’t in high demand in North Carolina.
(No offence to any Dutch participants of course…..)

Darn the luck, I’d have to fly to Hawaii to find shoes to match me f’less. Jeeze, just when it hits -20F. — -rob O< "mmm… Monkey Pod!" /() ^^

The overall picture I pick up from the equipment used by JE (RIP) is as has been quoted, but, in letter years you have to look at the Alembic explorers, the Warwick Buzzard and latterly the Status Buzzard. As for amps, I think JE used just about every make available!!! TE, SWR, Ashdown, custom cabinets…..etc and lots of ‘em too! — Alun P www.bassics.org

The sleeve for the original vinyl of "Smash Your Head" shows John playing a Fenderbird. His first two solo LPs both came out between "Who’s Next" and "Quadrophenia" so best guess is either a T-Bird or a Fenderbird was used. > I noticed there are a few types of Fender Precisions: Fender Precision > Bass, Fender Standard Precision Bass, Fender Deluxe P-Bass Special, Fender > American P-Bass Deluxe Hotrod, Fender American Deluxe Precision Bass V, > Fender P-Bass Special Edition, Fender Precision Bass Mexican Made, > etc…Which one did he use?
Until 1983, there was only the Fender Precision Bass….the different variations that are sold today didn’t exist back then. > By the way, would you know what kind of amp and other gear he used during > the same period?
He wa susing HiWatts for "Live at Leeds" and Sunn Coliseums for "Quadrophenia"…not sure at what point he switched over. > I’ve noticed that the new Ginson Thunderbirds IV Bass > for sale today are made of : > Body Material: Alder > Neck material:Maple > Fingerboard : Rosewood/Dot
Nope, those are Epiphones you a re looking ta. Real Gibson Thunderbirds are still made out of mahogany and have either rosewood or ebony fingerboards. > Was the one John Entwistle used made of the same material? More to the point is the older models had different pickups than the modern ones. — Brian Rost Stargen, Inc.

There are no replacement pickups like that. You would have to get a set of original pickups ($$$$$) or get someone to custom wind you a set somehow. — Brian Rost Stargen, Inc.

Oh come on, you guys like making your own PICKGUARDS, for goodness sake! I shudder to think of the difference in price between a purchased pickguard and the necessary equipment listed in the beautiful instructions posted earlier. (But then, I doubt you guys went out and bought new shoes to match your new bass, like I did.) Maybe he thought it might be fun to try it. -Donna

Thanks for the info Brian. I’ve heard that today’s Gibson Thunderbirds don’t sound like John Entwistle’s Gibson Thunderbird 64′ which he used on Who’s Next because the pickups were different. Which pickups could you buy to replace the pickups on todays Gibson Thunderbird which would replicate the sound of the Gibson Thunderbird 64′ which John Entwistle used on Who’s Next? Mark

What was the reasoning for doing this, and how much of a hack job would that be, putting a bolt-on neck where once was body-thru? I’ve owned a few of both, but never did understand why he’d hack them together like that — with his $$, why not just have one made with the T-bird body and the neck of choice? What did he do with the PuPs on the "FenderBirds" ?

<What was the reasoning for doing this, and how much of a hack job would that be, putting a bolt-on neck where once was body-thru?> Entwistle liked the Thunderbird body but prefered the Precision neck. He had several professional modified and had custom cases made, too. <I’ve owned a few of both, but never did understand why he’d hack them together like that — with his $$, why not just have one made with the T-bird body and the neck of choice?> Eventually he did. He put Precision necks on Gibson Explorer bodies. These became the model for the Exploiter basses Alembic made for him. My band’s site: www.strongerthandirt.com

The bodies and pickups remained stock, he just seemed to like the P-bass neck. — Brian Rost Stargen, Inc.

What kind of bass does John Entwistle use on his solo album "Smash your head against the wall" and "Whistle Rymes"’? What about on The Who albums: Tommy, Who’s Next, Quadrophinia? I heard that During that time period (1969 – 1974) John mostly favored Fender Precisions and Gibson thunderbirds. That’s a Precision you hear on the "Tommy" tours (including "Live at Leeds") and a Gibson on "Who’s Next". He also put Fender necks on Thunderbird bodies (thus the hybrid "FenderBird") and used them during the "Quadrophenia" tours. He used Rotosound SwingBass strings exclusively. I noticed there are a few types of Fender Precisions: Fender Precision Bass, Fender Standard Precision Bass, Fender Deluxe P-Bass Special, Fender American P-Bass Deluxe Hotrod, Fender American Deluxe Precision Bass V, Fender P-Bass Special Edition, Fender Precision Bass Mexican Made, etc…Which one did he use? Also, did he use a 4 or 5 string bass? By the way, would you know what kind of amp and other gear he used during the same period? How much do the bass guitar’s go for used or new and the amps? I’ve noticed that the new Ginson Thunderbirds IV Bass for sale today are made of : Body Material: Alder Neck material:Maple Fingerboard : Rosewood/Dot Was the one John Entwistle used made of the same material? I heard that the body material of Gibson Thunderbirds use to be made of Mahogony which gave a different sound. Which one’s are recommende or is it a matter of taste? Thanks Mark
