Late, Late Show. Again.
Question:
FWIW – I while back I posted about how my band (Last Train Home) was supposed to be on the Late, Late Show (on CBS with Craig Ferguson). I wasn’t part of the band for this trip. It turned out that they cut the musical section from that show for airing later. After a couple false alarms it looks like they really will be airing the clip tonight. If anyone is interested… -Scott McKnight

Thanks for heads up Scott. I’ll probably be watching. I’ve come to like this "Craig Ferguson" guy they dug up for the "Late Late Show" host. He’s not always ‘gut-busting’ funny, but some of his witty banter makes me chuckle. John King
Response:
I think Craig’s quite entertaining. Used to be a big Letterman fan, but it seems since the show’s gone so "corporate" with the switch to CBS its not as fun anymore. And Craig always makes me think of the Scottish "groundskeeper Willy" character from the Simpsons. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I’ve come to like this "Craig Ferguson" guy they dug up > for the "Late Late Show" host. Agreed! I do enjoy the show, but that is mainly due to Craig. I shouldn’t stay up so late, but I find myself wanting to hear his opening "chat" with the folks. See ya, John

Yep, the show’s writing and skits etc… really kind of bite, but Craig is somehow is able to transcend that and pull it off anyways. John King

Thanks for this second heads up. I konked out before the musical guests came on last time you alerted us. Even though I work Saturdays, that show is still before my bedtime and I was looking forward to seeing your band. But have you noticed how many frickin’ commercials they show after Craig announces next will be the musical guest? Fuck! Seems like about 10 minutes of adverts. Sheeks!

His most amazing role *ever* was a guest-role as a villain on the BBC sci-fi show ‘Red Dwarf’ a lonnnng time ago (like 1989)….. he looked totally different (100lbs. heavier) and spoke just like Andrew Dice Clay (creeped me out every time I saw that episode, lol)

Hey John, I agree! The guys opening stand up routine can be "off the wall" funny. Some of his humor can have a "bite" that is low key but hits home. I like their theme music also. I have heard the show strives to introduce obscure, no-name musical talent, which isn’t always to my preference of style, but I admire the platform offered. In the mid-60’s our local CBS affiliate KFMB TV-8 in San Diego had a unknown local TV personality hosting the "afternoon movie" and TV-8 "Dance-time". (Live show, typical filler stuff to fill the Saturday afternoon programming of the era.) Dance-time introduced some young guys in a band hailing from England sporting the name "The Who"… At the conclusion of their two song set, they proceeded to smash all their equipment which left the host dumbfounded and speechless of their act on live TV…… A friend of mine, who at a young age (late teens), fell into a career as a landscape contractor and landed many large commercial contracts. One job was landscaping KFMB’s newly constructed television studios. Being on a rushed schedule, the studios were up and running as we landscaped the facilities. We ran into the guy that hosted the Who’s San Diego debut and would chew the fat with him as he arrived and left work. A likeable guy, funny, naturally outgoing and cheerful. He would come out and visit with us during lunch break, bringing us sodas, joke around and just to hang out with the working stiffs. We became friends and would go and catch concerts and hang at the beach to watch girls go by etc. A couple of years later, his career move relocated him to New York and eventual fame. At that point, contact between him and ourselves was lost. His rise to stardom and the "on air" persona he adopted wasn’t especially appealing to me personally anymore, even though he was still witty and often funny. Who was this guy?? Cheers, robert P.S. The summer air you are fanning this way has been brutal! Easy on the "flames" okay? 8^)

Hi Robert, It’s been a brutal hot and dry summer here, but we’ve finally started to get some rain in the last week. In fact it’s raining outside right now. Maybe we can make up some of the 10" of rainfall we were short for this year. All the grass and even trees were turning brown, and leaves were falling like Sept.- Oct. by the end of July! The cattleman’s hay has burnt up in the fields, and they’re talking about getting out of state help, (like we sent Texas one year recently) just to be able to feed the stock. Anyways, Old Dave Letterman seems to think the world of Regis Philbin, and has had him on his show like 900 times or something. (Ok maybe not THAT many, but far more than ANY other guest). I suspect that they’re both as close to being friends to each other as either are comfortable with. Along with their "stardom" I think both of them have become near paranoid about people’s motives for being around them, which I suppose, is somewhat understandable. Speaking of talk show hosts, I can remember watching Johnny Carson when I was 10-12 years old and not getting why the grown-ups thought he was so damn funny. I preferred watching the more mild mannered and intellectual Dick Cavet. Maybe ten years later, I came to realize that Johnny Carson was funny as hell, and at the earlier age I just didn’t grasp all the innuendo

Wow Scott – super cool! Well I managed to see your guys play and totally dug it. Beats the hell out of country pop swill. And some flamenco horn – too cool. So you are usually the lead guitarist or do both of you guys play in the band together – perhaps trading leads? So who gets the credit for the writing of that song? One author or the whole band? Whatever, it was exceptionally well composed and performed almost flawlessly. Excellent dynamics too. You guys have a CD with more of the same on it? If so, I’d like to buy one. Call me at 504 482-1103 and I’ll call you right back. I have a flat rate long distance service. But be sure to call after 2PM Central Daylight time Tues-Sat and before 6PM. Ed

While "Whirlwind Reaper" might be an appropriate anthem, I believe you’ll be hearing "I’m Walking on Mud’n’slime" This one looks like it might really wreck the old part of town… it’s been a while since anything like a category 4 has made a direct hit on N.O. IIRC. Them pumps is old.

Meteorologists seem to have the only profession that allows them to be wrong more than half the time and yet they still get to keep their jobs.

John, I had an emergency last-minute gig last night and didn’t get to see the show. Hopefully someone on the block recorded it. The guitarist usually plays a Fender Deville. I believe the amps they used out there were loaners from west-coast friends. I can try to find out what he used. If you go to the band web site (www.lasttrainhome.com) and poke around you’ll see that there are a lot of members of that band. We play in different configs depending on who can make it, how much room is available, etc. Sometimes we’ll have 10-12 guys on stage. Sometimes we’re asked to have far fewer. The band has opened for Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton (last Tueday) and they wouldn’t let us have more than 6 people at those shows. Because it’s always a little different, configuration-wise, no two shows are ever quite the same. Besides the people who were on LLS we often have a sax player and a mandolin/harmonica player. There are currently 3 regular guitarists, plus a slew of guitarist friends who may join the band for certain shows or when they travel through distant parts of the country. The three main guitarists live in the DC area and do mostly local shows. Jared (who played LLS) used to do all the touring but recently joined those of us with families and dayjobs, which makes touring/travelling harder. I play guitar and baritone guitar at shows. I’ve been known to contribute some keyboards to recordings. On the CD version of "Dogs on the Eastside" (the song they did on LLS) I played banjo, organ and synth. Thanks for watching, -Scott

Sometimes Jared and I both play shows. There’s another guitarist (Bill) who also does shows. Sometimes there may be one e-guitarist, sometimes two. We all take turns. Jared was also engineer/co-roducer of the most recent CD. He’s the one who played the guitar on the recorded version of that song. For more info see the reply I wrote to John. >So who gets the credit for the writing of that song? >One author or the whole band? Eric Brace (lead singer/band leader) wrote that song. It was written based on the fact that there are packs of dogs that roam East Nashville (where the bassist and drummer live) which tend to bark at trains when they pass through. >You guys have a CD with more of the same >on it? There’s a bunch of CDs. The style of music is fairly eclectic – country influenced (old country) with some rock/pop/folk/jazz/whatever. There’s info on how to get CDs on the website (www.lasttrainhome.com). Thanks for tuning into the show. :) -Scott McKnight
