Help, my bass sounds terrible

Question:

|> Hi, |> |> Please help… I have an Ibanez EXB404 Bass guitar and the sound from it |> is muddy and lifeless… |> |> Any ideas on how I can improve the sound… I’ve put new strings on it, |> set it up, tried different amps all to no avail… |> |> Any suggestions on bringing life to my bass would be greatly appreciated. |> |> Regards, |> Darren Arnott |> Melbourne, Australia. The only other thing that I could suggest is getting new electronics.  EMG’s are nice as are Bartollini’s (though I haven’t tried the latter). Of coarse there is always the odd bass that no amount of fiddling may remidy. Mack — Mack King               |       Blah blah blah… my opinions only

it may be the bass. i play an Ibanez SR800 w/ stock pick-ups and R.Cocco strings thru a GK RB800 & GenzBenz 4×10T cab and it sounds great. try replacing the pickups. course, it may be you ;) hehe just kiddin. but seriously, when i first started playing i sounded like shit and now 5 years later i don’t sound *anything* like those feeble attemps back then. you might also try some subtle effects, like chorus, reverb, bit o’ distortion, a BBE Sonic Maximizer (anyone experienced one?), or something similar. yeah, this can get expensive but when it comes to your sound money should be no object — hehe, yeah, right ;) goodluck :) binky

Howdy, Well, I guess you have a lot of options available.. all at different prices, of course! The first thing I would try is getting the bass serviced by a good luthier. S/he should be able to tell you if there is anything amazingly wrong with the bass. This should include adjusting the truss rod, the action, checking the intonation, checking and cleaning the pickups and pots and giving the bass really good clean! I was amazed when I got my bass back after having a good clean. The sound was just hte little bit more full! If that comes back ok, you can always try changing the pickups. I use EMG’s and theyare great! Youcould try installing and on-bass EQ, to process the sound before it goes down the wire to the amp. A combination of these would be to install another pickup, and various pots to controll the sound out of each one you have eg: balence, tone, EQ, etc etc… Of course, If you mess with pickups, you really should try a whole host of string sets to see which combination sounds best… I know it sounds like a long process, but I guess you just have be methodical, change one thing at a time, so you can always unchange it if the sound gets worse! Hope THis helps… Phil

Problem is most likely the bass…low end Ibanez basses…especially the EX series…are more or less junk I wouldn’t put any big investments into it if you plan on getting serious about playing bass…I would just save a buy a new one… if you just want to fool around on that bass and get a little better sound…new pickups are the best bet.
