Ibanez EX question

Question:

Well, Asian basswood it is!  I’ve done it to my EX.  So did my best friend. Soft wood, not much grain.  The finish is a Nightmare to remove.  You will lose ALL of the bass’ punch, as the finish is what causes the meat of it. It could be replaced by many coats of poly though.  No liquid stripper of any sort will remove this finish they use.  The grain is similar to balsa wood. — r. Response:

Ouch.  Any time you need to get punch from finish, use a different wood! I can’t believe dumbass guitar players shelling out $1000 for basswood Ibanez 7-strings when they could get a mahogany-bodied Dean or BC Rich (the latter being neck-through…*drool*) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Well, Asian basswood it is!  I’ve done it to my EX.  So did my best friend. > Soft wood, not much grain.  The finish is a Nightmare to remove.  You will > lose ALL of the bass’ punch, as the finish is what causes the meat of it. > It could be replaced by many coats of poly though.  No liquid stripper of > any sort will remove this finish they use.  The grain is similar to balsa > wood. > — > r. > (snappy witticism) > I had a friend who played an EX bass from Ibanez and it sounded like it > was > made of plywood. > Sorry bad joke… > -Bryan > >I have an old ibanez ex and am going to strip the finish off.  I want a > >natural finish.  Does anyone know the kind of wood that the body is made > >of?

I have an old ibanez ex and am going to strip the finish off.  I want a natural finish.  Does anyone know the kind of wood that the body is made of?

Response:

Was it expensive when new?  If not, it’s probably made of Asian basswood or agathis, both of which are very soft and need a polyurethane/polyester finish.  They’re not especially interesting-looking woods either, so you’ll probably want to stain them and then put several coats of polyurethane or polyester on them. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have an old ibanez ex and am going to strip the finish off.  I want a > natural finish.  Does anyone know the kind of wood that the body is made > of?
