Pulled an old bass out of a closet?

Question:

The 800RB is biampable, but it has a wierd impedance requirement on the high amp. Don’t ever connect anything lower than that on the high amp or it will blow! For probably about $150 you could get a similar vintage Peavey 1508 (or is it 1516?) cabinet that is biampable with a 15 and a pair of 8-inch mid/tweets. Kinda bulky though… Matthew

Any suggestions warnings about the head frying the speakers because it is mismatched in some electronic quagmire would be helpful? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have pulled an old Bass guitar out of a closet that has been stored > in a hard case for probably 10 years or more.  Is there any resources > on the internet that would let me know if I need to do any sort of > reconditioning etc…  Is it safe to just start playing it?  I don’t > know if the strings were lossened or anything.  I probably put it away > in the early, early nineties and it has probably been there ever > since?  Any information on it (value etc…) would be appriciated.  It > is an Ibanez Musician all original everything with no modifications? > Serial number L851168.

Just for your info the bass was made in December of 1985.Take it to a good tech and he’ll give it a once over.Spray the pots, change the strings and check the intonation and neck angle.Sounds like a nice bass.If it has active electronics hopefully the battery hasn’nt leaked and messed the electronics

I have an Ibanez Musician myself (from ‘79) and I love it.  Have un!  -Henry C-G

IIRC, the Musician series was the top of the line for the Ibanez basses back then…very nice basses

start playing it? I dunno, but if I was locked in a closet for 10 years I’d be pretty pissed. You might want to buy it a few drinks and calm it down a bit before going near it….

I have pulled an old Bass guitar out of a closet that has been stored in a hard case for probably 10 years or more.  Is there any resources on the internet that would let me know if I need to do any sort of reconditioning etc…  Is it safe to just start playing it?  I don’t know if the strings were lossened or anything.  I probably put it away in the early, early nineties and it has probably been there ever since?  Any information on it (value etc…) would be appriciated.  It is an Ibanez Musician all original everything with no modifications? Serial number L851168.

Response:

take a good look at the neck and check for warping, feel for string tension (you’ll probably have a couple of strings popping off by now), take the strings off take a good look at it, wipe it down, treat the fingerboard, polish the frets, and restring gently. Check truss and action – play away.

Just start playing it and you should know pretty quick if anything needs to be done.  There’s no reason it shouldn’t be in the same condition it was in ten years ago, with the exception of some corrosion on the strings and possible change in the action due to humidity changes.  It’s not like an old engine that hasn’t been started in ten years, just grab it and start playing.
