Recommend a bass

Question:

GAS is getting worse…again. My wish list: – 5-string – ~2000USD price range – narrow string spacing – hefty neck (in precision style) What would you recommend? I’ve been settling towards Zon Sonus or Roscoe, though it may be hard to meet the price. And I have no idea of their string spacing, hopefully its less than standard Jazz’s. TR

Response:

Hefty neck and narrow string spacing brings Warwick to mind.

Zon sonus has string spacing similar to a jazz. The legacy has the wider, p-bass neck, but it’s a lot more expensive.

Response:

aye, that it do…(sound like warwick, that is) Where are you, Timo? Matt Schmill builds some great handmade basses that would fit your specs… could be had for a good price too. He’s in Massachusetts, USA though…I’m guessing you’re not? His FBB basses are quite nice. http://eksl.cs.umass.edu/~schmill/fbb/pages/ might not hurt to check with him anyway. m – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Hefty neck and narrow string spacing brings Warwick to mind. > GAS is getting worse…again. I live nowhere near US. I think I’ll have to start looking at warwicks much more closely. The main reason why I dislike warwicks a bit is that they are everywhere around here. I’m desperately trying to stand out with strange gear 8) So it may be a warwick or maybe a full custom by some local luthier… hmmmm… TR

Response:

If you’re looking for strange, then I think Warwick’s Dolphin might be right up your alley, Timo.

Check out Jens Ritter’s site (Ritter guitars).  He makes some of the coolest looking basses around.  I’d love to try one out someday! Otherwise, I’ll second the Dolphin for you. Also, check out Keith Roscoe’s stuff (Roscoe basses).  His shop’s about 30 minutes from here and he makes excellent basses.  They are 35" scale 5 strings with the tightest low B around (besides modulus).  They are a cross between a P sound and a grand piano  (guess which online bass store I got that description from) Jordan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> So it may be a warwick or maybe a full custom by some local luthier… > hmmmm… > TR

Yeah, is there a bass for sale at bassnw that doesn’t have the "clarity of a grand piano". Roscoes does sound superb whenever I hear one. The LG body shape is somewhat strange to my eye… SKB looks much better. But then I found this: http://www.marleaux-bass.de/ I guess its gonna be a Consat Custom 5 for me! Then I only have gear that has been on high-end corner of Bass Player ;-) BTW: Since BP site is quite dead at the moment, take a look at www.guitarist.co.uk for gear reviews. TR
