Bass Speaker 18" Help
Question:
I want my 5 string bass to punch on a low c. I want an 18 inch speaker that will respond well to a CARVER PM900 Power Amp. I am interested in pushinng 8 ohms 350W through one channel into the 18" and then driving 2x 10" Speakers and maybe a horn with the other 350w. I want the 18" for LOW I mean SUBWOOFER- you feel your bowels open but you can still cary on a conversation, that kinda low! I doubt I will ever need too loud as the bars and places to play around here are not very big. Can you suggest an affordable 18" Speaker that can go LOW in the FREQ range?? By Affordable I would like to spend around $200 and could go up to $300 but not above that. I want just the speaker.

Look at www.parts-express.com for Eminance. I believe the Kappa or Kilomax series will be in the price range your looking at. I use a Kappa 15 and 4 Delta 10s with my rig. It produces plenty of volume in the low B to E range. Middle C

Go to www.steelsound.com. They have a Madison Executioner 18" speaker for less than $150. It will open your bowels with ease. I own three of them in Madison 183 enclosures and they work as advertised. John Dough

K, Thanks! I notice that some magnets are 250+ OZ. Should I be paying attention to a bigger magnet? Stan

Larger magnets will go hand in hand with higher handling power and lower frequency ratings…. so in a sense yes, but weigh in all the specs to make your decision. I chose the Kappa LF 15 for it’s low frequency capabilty, in combinition with the frequency range of the Delta 10s when I built my cabinets. The 15 alone does not have very good range on the high end, but the 10’s make up for what it lacks…. and vice versa. The combination of the 2 give me a great deal of power at any frequency. Middle C

Parts Express has great clearance and scratch-and-dent sales on many things, including speakers. (Mounted, unmounted, and returned, etc.) Only thing I hate about Parts Express is that they are based in my home state, and I get TAXED. Damn.
