I had to stop right here when you said this… In my humble opinion, there’s no better effect for bass than the compressor. When I got mine, dbx160, my drummer at the time marveled at how even, clean and more dynamic my sound was. By compressing in a subtle manner, I was able to make my tone clearer and it sat better in the mix and with the bass drum too. As for screwing up your touch, it’s possible you had the compression up too high. All limiting will do is squash your sound when you get to a certain level, and this effect screws even more with your dynamics than light compression does. In the studio the compressor can’t be beat either. Have you ever had signal peaks on your bass that made the tracks unusable? That slightly overdriven buzz on a few notes that makes you redo the entire track? The compressor gets rid of all this, when used correctly, and ensures you have a nice, even signal that you won’t have to worry about later on in the mix down stage. As I step off my soapbox, I think you should give the good ol compressor another chance. Set the threshold at about -20, the ratio at 3:1 and the level at high noon (no boost or cut) and then let me know if you still feel the sound is adversely affected. Deal?  :) Kind Regards, Nathaniel — flikWORLD Design reply to: nat at flikworld(dot)com

The Behringer units work well, but lack flexibility. Still, for the price… While you are ordering Behringer equipment, consider ordering their crossover unit. The second most expensive unit is perfect. This enables you to run the higher tones of your bass through the effects chain and into the sound system. Even your guitar effects unit will work good at this, since it isn’t trying to deal with very low frequencies. All of this occurs outside of the bass guitar/bass amp loop, via the preamp out or effects out jack, so the foundation of the band remains intact. I’ve played in three man bands before and I can appreciate how important the solid foundation is that the bass player puts down. — The Amazing Seismo

I have to say, Digitech stuff is CRRRAP. Noisy, lossy, and the effects are wussy compared to your average BOSS stompbox. Come to think of it, a used BOSS BE5 or ME 5 multi effects would do you quite nicely — Learning funk bass? visit www.js3jazz.com/store.htm

I’ve been using my digitech RP7 multi effects, intended for a guitar, with my bass for a while now.. but I have to say, I’m really unhappy with it even as an interim unit. The trebles on the effects really make you bust your butt trying to get rid of them. I need a distortion.. and I don’t want a ‘fuzzy’ one.. somehting with that high end grittiness that’s so stand out noticeable. I want growl and grind. I would like a flanger that works well… for, say.. Some Kinda Wonderful.. I add a few things to the bassline, but I hate to overdo it yet still feel if I got a nice flange going it would be pretty nice, live. A lot of people like compresors on the bass, but I find it screws up my touch. .. messes with dynamics.. and doesn’t do anything for the peaks.. still.. a limiter might not be enough for all songs or for all night.. We have a good enough sound system that I can slap a little reverb in there.. studio type, mostly and tight so I’ll want that. I haven’t found a mono chorus that will fill the bill either.. everything I’ve heard tends to knock all the bottom out or otherwise overpower the lows. Noise gate has probably got to be in there. I don’t need cab sims or anything.. what I’ve got does what I want. I’m afraid a digitech BP 8 would just be the same thing as my rp7 … I like the RP7s suboctave just fine.. it really works.. I’d like to have an octave above now and then, too.. but.. not with this thing.. too much no matter what I tweak. I was thinking of the Behringer Virtualizer Pro DSP2024P.. nice price.. most of the features I’d want. and the Behringer EX1200 Ultrabass Pro is on sale.. Jump in here and give me some experienced opinions on this stuff. In a three piece band I’d really like to expand my bass sounds.. I have a Behringer BX300T head.. so I can run either a line out sans preamp to one channel on the Virtualizer and give the PA a stereo signal set up just for it.. while using the other channel in my effects loop .. but I worry that unless I have the same settings on each, and maybe even then!, I’m going to get an indescribably weirdness between my onstage and outfront sounds.. Ideally, I think, a multi effects device of some kind would be the thing. I’d like to have a set straight bass sound.. and then attack the songlist with the effects to keep things interesting. Price is a factor.. these Behringers seem the best, so far, because I’d only have a bit over 200.00 for both. I thought maybe I’d build a wooden rack to match the bas head and mount the above with a power supply in it.. OK.. that’s all I’ve got on my mind right now.. any help appreciated.
