Guitar World's Bass Guitar
Question:
I just picked up the premiere issue of this new bass magazine from the publishers of Guitar World. It has Robert Trujillo on the cover. Haven’t really been through it but it has columns by John Paul Jones, Shavo Odadjian of System of a Down, Fieldy, and Jason Newsted. Also has a picture of Jaco on the table of contents page and a review of Punk Jazz: The Jaco Pastorius Anthology. There is also a review of Standing in the Shadows of Motown with a pick of Jamerson holding his ‘62 P-Bass "The Funk Machine" The editor is James Rotondi. In the front section it has pieces about Noel Redding’s death, BunnyBass.com, Paul Simonon,Larry Graham, Chris Chaney (who is also on the cover of this month’s Bass Player), Alex James of Blur, the Allen Woody tribute in New Orleans and some stuff on Godsamck , Linkin Park , etc. The feature articles are on Chi Cheng of the Deftones, Newsted, Trujillo (including a little piece about Cliff Burton), and a lesson with Oteil Burbridge. Of course being a Guitar World production the transcriptions are tab and they have "Orion" by Metallica, "Longview" by Green Day, and "Pea" by RHCP. Finally their are some gear reviews Being a Guitar World publication there is a big focus on Nu-Metal and to a lesser extent pop-punk but there seems to be a little bit in it for everyone – at least it gives Bass Player some more competition in North America.

Dan- Funny thing, i just picked up both those mags at the same time. Read the Chaney interview in BP, showing his rig with the Aggie’s and Bass Pod Pro. Now turn to the back cover Aggie ad on the GW publication. Looks like a photo from the same session, but with rack panels conveniently covering up all the Line6 Stuff! lmao, I guess that wouldn’t look too cool for them

Am I the only one who found Fieldy’s article in the magazine rather…um….well….pointless? The more he tried to explain how that song of his works the more I think he is going to be the Kerry King of Bass Guitar World. (I hope someone gets that) The John Paul Jones section was great as well as Newsteads. I’m very happy with the magazine and I’m very surprised that they mentioned as many eclectic bassists as they did rather than just the mainstream ones.

I thought it had a pretty metal/modern slant to it, actually. The Oteil article was good. Brief coverage of the Jaco Punk Jazz CD. Most of the rest dealt with Ozzy and Metallica. The gear reviews were shallow. I hope they maintain a more eclectic view, and don’t directly target the teen beginner. There was an interesting thing in there, though. Just prior to the tabs section, Digitech had an ad where they gave you their recommend settings on such-and-such an effects box for the upcoming tabbed songs. If I were more into that type of music, and more into sitting around, trying to sound like someone else, I’d be very interested in getting that effects box. I’m not, but it’s good marketing!

This magazine was made for me. It’s the first bass magazine I’ve read cover to cover. Really liked the articles, and since I’m still learning how to play bass, it was nice to see Tab and columns by artists I listen to. While I like all styles of music, I like the heavy stuff the best. Brett
