tab needed!!!!!!!
Question:
I’ll admit it….I used TAB. I’m a beginning bassist, and the best reason that I could find for using TAB, is that it helped me learn to read music. By seeing music, with both, it was easy to see how notes in standard notation matched to the fretboard, and to learn the name of each note. It is useful to pick up a quick line, but confusing because it doesn’t show the tempo, be it note length or rests. After the twelve step program, I’m happy to say that I am not dependant on TAB….. Scott Barrett Baba, Don’t get me wrong, I’m merely pointing out that if someone wants to learn a couple of songs to play with his friends, they can get the tabs and go play….I agree, you simply can’t become a better musician if you rely on tabs….It’s just an alternative to spending on lessons and books for those who don’t yet take their playing seriously…perhaps never will. BTW, I meant "we" as in my friends and me…. I’d like to hear one good argument for tab… I have expressed my views on this newsgroup over and over again on how I think tab is a waste of time… I think it’s a crutch to real learning not only to sight reading but also training your ears… I can go on and on (and I will) but I would love to hear a strong argument for it… I understand the gratification of learning a new song if you can’t hear it or read it (and that is valid to some degree) but think of the bigger picture… Your learning and gratification stop at the end of that tab if you spent that time on your ear or reading notation the rewards are endless… "So I’m open" Any good reason for using tab? BABA

Right on, honestly, unless the line is very distinct and integral to the song (eg, Red Barchetta by Rush), I rarely play note for note anyway, or even the same way each time. Improvisation is the spice of life

I guess it all depends on your background. A lot of people out there these days can’t do any math calculations without a calculator either. Tom G. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >heck, just listen to the damn song. What is with you guys and tab?

I’ve been around music for over 30 years and playing bass for the past 25. I’ve never had a job yet where I was asked to read or work out a section from Tab. Having seen all the requests for bass tabs on the net I took a look at a book in a local music store. It didn’t mean a thing. It seems to have all the drawbacks of all other styles of writing, Notation, Chords, Nashville numbers, and no advantages. Mike Oxford

Why don’t you back off and let the guy make a simple request. Do any of you know why this guy wants TAB for the song? ….Instead of getting so damn rightous about the pro’s and con’s of TAB, try for once to think how you can help this guy out. Half the guys buying bass guitars, amps and all the other equipment we all like using so much are doing so to form a band with their friends. In time they will develop their own style and different ways of learning. In the meantime the only way these folks can learn to play songs they want is by TAB. So get a grip on life and try to remember how we all started learning!!! I ended up in a band with some schoolfriends, we used TAB to learn a few songs we wanted to play and after that we wrote our own songs…. If someone wants to use TAB to learn – LET THEM!!! At the end of the day, they’re the ones who will decide if they want to learn more or stop where they are. Without learning the basics, these musicians will never get any further…. There, I’ve said my piece…. Gil – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->heck, just listen to the damn song.
