Dan,   I would recommend a Yamaha 250rbx it’s around that price range. Or if you want a good sounding bass go to your local music store and see if they have any used basses with the second pickup pref. a jazz bass. And I’m sure your friend will like the sound better in this bass rather then if you buy a new bass for your price range.
